Key Mold Engineering Highlights for Heavy Duty Boxes


Reinforced Rib & Fork Pocket Design — Massive internal/external ribs and fork pockets require complex core pulling. We use H13 (2344 ESR) hardened steel for fork-pocket slides to withstand high clamp forces and abrasive glass-fiber wear.

Thick-Wall Cooling Strategy — Thick sections (3–4.5mm) require aggressive cooling to control cycle time. We implement dual isolated circuits + BeCu (MOLDMAX™) inserts at rib intersections and bottom radii to extract heat from the thickest sections first.

Wear-Resistant Steel Selection — Glass-fiber reinforced PP is highly abrasive. H13 (HRC 48–52 nitrided surface) is mandatory for cores, slides, and wear plates. Cavity in 718H (HRC 33–38) or 2738HH for polishability and strength.

High-Pressure Gating & Filling — Thick-wall, high-viscosity material requires high injection pressure. We use large submarine gates on reinforced flanges or hot tip gates (YUDO/SYNVENTIVE) to ensure pack-out without gate vestige failure.

Structural DFM & Moldflow Analysis — We simulate fill, pack, cool, and warp to ensure the thick-walled box remains square under load and stacks perfectly. Rib thickness is optimized to 60–70% of wall thickness to prevent sink marks on the visible face.

Anti-Static (ESD) Options — For electronics/automotive use, we design molds to run carbon-loaded PP (ESD-safe), ensuring material flow doesn't cause burn marks (requires excellent venting).

Q: Can you use P20 steel for a heavy-duty box mold?

A: We strongly advise against P20 for heavy-duty industrial bins, especially with glass-fiber material. P20 (HRC 28–33) will wear out quickly on cores and slides. H13 (HRC 48–52 nitrided) is mandatory for longevity.

Q: How long is the cycle time for a 100L heavy-duty box?

A: Due to thick walls (3–4mm), cooling time dominates. Expect 45–70 seconds depending on wall thickness and cooling efficiency (BeCu usage). We optimize this in Moldflow.

Q: Do you make the dolly/base and lid as well?

A: Yes. We typically quote the Bin Body (1×1), Attached Lid (2×2 or 4×1 cavity), and Dolly/Base (1×1) as separate molds to optimize cooling and cycle times independently.

Q: What about anti-static (ESD) requirements?

A: We design molds for carbon-filled PP (ESD material). This requires excellent venting (porous steel inserts, deep vents) to prevent burn marks caused by the carbon content.

Q: What information do you need for a quote?
