Correct Steel Selection for Mold Base & Core/Cavity

For multi-cavity crate molds (especially 2×2 or 4-cavity layouts), we specify pre-hardened mold base steel with HRC ≥ 33 to resist deflection under high clamp forces. Core & cavity options:

P20 (HRC 28–33): Cost-effective for medium runs

718H / 2738 (HRC 33–38): Recommended for multi-cavity production

H13 (quenched & tempered, HRC 44–48) or S136: For 2M+ shot lifespan, especially when running regrind/recycled HDPE

Controlled Heat Treatment & Hardness

Each steel component receives precisely controlled hardening/tempering. Cavity and core hardness is balanced—hard enough for wear resistance but not over-hardened to avoid brittleness and micro-cracking during thermal cycling.

Precision-Machined Guide & Moving Systems

All guide pillars, bushes, angle pins, and slide rails are CNC/grinding machined to ±0.01mm tolerance. Hand-fitting or file-finishing on motion parts is strictly prohibited—this ensures smooth, repeatable multi-million-cycle operation without premature seizure.

Recycled Material Protection (Optional)

If your process uses recycled PP/HDPE (one-time-use or mixed crates) containing small metal fragments or grit:

We design filtered feed zone considerations and recommend extra-hardened cavity inserts (nitride or DLC-coated) to resist abrasion from embedded particles.

Strategic baffle/edge design helps prevent contaminants from embedding into cavity surfaces.

Optimized Filling System – Valve-Gated Hot Runner

Durable milk crates are typically molded from low MFR HDPE (MFI = 4–6 g/10min), which has higher viscosity. Our multi-cavity Milk Crate Moulds employ balanced H-type hot runner manifolds with valve gates (YUDO / Synventive / Anole compatible) to:

Ensure simultaneous, pressure-balanced fill across all cavities

Minimize flow hesitation & reduce weld-line visibility in handle zones

Eliminate cold sprue waste → faster cycles & lower material cost

Superior Cooling with Mold-Max / BeCu Inserts

Cooling dominates 60%+ of the molding cycle. For high-duty crate molds:

Mold-Max (beryllium copper alloy) inserts are placed at thick rib intersections, handle bases, and bottom corners—areas prone to hot spots.

Cooling channels follow Moldflow-optimized layouts with parallel water routing to keep ΔT < 3–5°C between cavities.

Result: Typical cycle time 32–45 seconds for standard milk crates (even faster on stack molds).

For single-use/light-duty crates running tempered steel cores, we still implement full perimeter cooling circuits with baffles/bubblers for optimum heat extraction.

Synchronized Ejection for Faster Cycling

Our multi-cavity crate molds can be equipped with a mechanical early-ejection linkage that begins ejector plate movement during mold opening, or you can command your injection machine to run simultaneous open + eject hydraulic actions. This shaves 1–2 seconds per shot—critical in high-volume dairies.

Four-side actuated slides (hydraulic cylinders + angle lifters) handle undercut handles and side ribs with micron-precise guidance to prevent flash or drag marks.

Machine Recommendation

We recommend a high-speed injection molding machine with screw RPM ≥ 350 and an accumulator-assisted injection unit for rapid high-pressure fill of low-MFI HDPE—essential for multi-cavity crates to avoid short shots and excessive packing time.

③ Handle Area Venting – Critical for Crate Strength


The carry handle is the highest stress zone when a full milk crate is lifted. If air is trapped here → incomplete fusion/weld line → premature crack initiation.

Dedicated exhaust grooves (0.01–0.02mm depth) along parting lines at handle extremities

Venting inserts / porous steel vent plugs at last-fill positions in deep handle recesses
